    Welcome to my blog!

The feed you see below is a combination of my personal animation/games blog and a required course blog.
The course blog is mainly a place to document my university work and critique, evaluate and document my progression through the year. This previously got marked and went towards a percentage of my course, during my undergrad. I've continued doing it during my masters because it keeps me motivated and shows others who visit my site what I've been working on recently! (and it's nice to show progression of my work, not just the final product)

Last Notes: Final Roundup (and the film)

    August 30, 2017

So to end my Last Notes post, here's a quick roundup!

Working on the film was amazing, we ended up being such an incredible team and although there were road bumps (which is expected in any production) we were able to discuss and pull through all of them and complete the project on time!

The film is not without it's issues, there were parts we'd have liked to have added if we had time (such as VFX saliva on the roar shot and more polished animation in some shots) but overall the film was a succe...

    Last Notes: Animatics and Animation

    August 27, 2017

Time to start blogging about the masters project (and boy is this going to be a massive one!) The past 3 months have been incredibly stressful, productive and amazing! Our team has worked so hard to complete this final film and despite bumps in the road, we were able to complete Last Notes and hand it in on time!

Because of the scope of this project (and the fact I haven't posted anything about it in 3 months) I'm going to be splitting these blog posts up into 3 sections, that I'll put up over t...

    Munchin' Monk Roundup

    April 1, 2017

As of the time of writing this post, our group project is officially handed in and we've had a good 2 days to relax after what has been an amazing, but exhausting journey!

Munchin' Monk was created as part of our 'Group Project' module, in which we had 7 weeks to go from an idea to a final rendered short film. This was my first experience on a 3D project from the very beginning (as with Headless I joined when animation started) so was a huge learning experience for me. I took up the role of Prod...

    The Billy Bob Saga!

    December 9, 2016

Today was our last hand in of the Semester, our Billy Bob project. This was a follow-on for our pre-production  PDF project that I mentioned in my last post (and won't bore you with as it's mostly just research/idea development and storyboards) :)

We got an option to do the pre production for either an animation project or a modelling project in a particular style. I enjoy animation more, so chose animation for my project. The brief being to animate Billy Bob overcoming an obstacle and Billy Bob...

    A quick tiger walk study

    November 28, 2016

I discovered an awesome tiger rig by CG Spectrum a couple of days ago and thought I'd do a quick tiger walk study in my free time :)

Creature animation is always something that has really interested me, so hopefully I'll have more time to practice with this in the new year!

Below is my attempt at a tiger walk cycle, using reference footage from various places to get it as accurate as possible :)

It's still got a few issues, I think, like the back legs being a little too floppy for my liking and...

    Let's bounce!

    November 11, 2016

This morning we had our hand-in for our first assignment, a bouncing ball assignment, much like the one I did during my first year at Falmouth Uni!

The bouncing ball is a pretty common task to test the skill of an animator, just because it's so applicable to various parts of the animation principles/process and is a quick and easy way to see their level/understanding of it!

Our task was to create 2 realistic balls, one heavy, one light and one ball with a personality, showing a change in emotion/...

Center or Gravity and Timing to Music practice

    October 4, 2016

We've started our lectures now and I've been learning a heck ton about modelling, animation and rendering in Maya! We get our first assignment soon, but for now it's just been lots of little practice tasks in class to get everyone up to speed and comfortable using maya :)

Below are a couple of ones I've completed for lectures. In our timing lecture we were taught about the importance of not keeping everything at one speed, so our lecturer set us a small task using the Hobo rig available on Creat...

    New 3D Showreel!

    July 26, 2016

I've already added it to other social media, but I thought I'd just make a quick post showing my new showreel!

Taking some advice from other animators, I've changed the order of it, added some completed Headless Shots now it's out of the festival circuit and I don't have to limit them and done a little bit of tweaking on the Fox/Nico 11 Second scene to make the posing look a little more natural! (although I plan to replace it completely soon!)

Now that I've saved enough to fund myself for a year...

    Headless is now public!

    July 19, 2016

I've talked about it SO much during this blog, but now I can finally link you to it!

Headless, a final year collaborative film project I was an animator on, is now available to view publicly online!

Previously we had to keep it quiet, whilst it was going through the festival circuit, but now it's free for anyone to view, below! :)

    Headless Shot Development

    August 20, 2015

It's been a while since we finished Headless, so I've been sorting out the files on my hard drive, putting the shots I worked on into folders for rough/completed etc in case they're ever needed again for some reason!

I found a lot of old LAV's so below is a super quick video I compiled of LAV/Rough/1st Pass/Completed Headless shots :) Sadly we did have a few issues with some of the controllers (the eyes and hands) not rendering out the frames on them, so there's a bit of discrepancy between my f...
